Aside from the natural effect on allergies and sickness that often accompanies it, I love the changing of seasons. And in their own ways, I deeply enjoy each of the four seasons we experience. In the midst of winter and summer I find myself desiring the next, and honestly would enjoy longer fall and spring seasons. At the end of the day, however, creation isn’t about me.
Creation is entirely about God! More specifically, it is through creation that we are cued to God’s eternal power and divine nature. The beauty and majesty of the world we see, including God’s power to change the seasons, is intended to direct our thoughts and beliefs to a power greater than ourselves or any human or spiritual reality aside of God. Think of the beautiful, artistic design we see all around us. Consider how intentionally all of creation is meticulously woven together.
No one should ever question that God is eternally powerful and that He is truly divine. We are given strong evidence of the One True God’s character in creation! So much so, in fact, that the Apostle Paul tells us that every person is without excuse (Rom. 1:18-23). People far smarter than I call this general revelation, and Paul says that though people have this majestic revelation, they “suppress the truth unrighteousness” by choosing to walk according to our own wisdom rather than God’s.
So the Lord goes a step further than leaving us with general revelation to giving us special revelation, which we see in the Old and New Testaments, and which make up the Bible. Have you ever read a passage of the Bible and sized it up according to how you understand it—according to whether or not you think it makes sense? (I have too!) This is another way we suppress—or work actively to push down or deny—God’s perfect wisdom in the Bible?
So what’s the point of all this? God’s has lovingly given us creation to show us that He is the eternal designer. More than that He has given us the perfect Bible to show us that salvation and wisdom come to is through the sacrificial death of Jesus because we are sinful and Jesus is perfect (John 3:16-21). And the perfect Savior willingly died on the cross for this sinful pastor, and for you. Do you suppress—or work actively to push down or deny—God’s perfect and only plan of salvation? What about any other aspect of God’s perfect wisdom revealed in the Bible?
This spring, with Holy Week coming soon, will you allow God’s creation to accomplish part of its purpose to turn your heart heavenward in all of His eternal and divine beauty? Will you allow God’s creation to lead you to submit to and worship God through Jesus?
Creation is not God. God is spirit and we must worship Him in spirit and in truth as the Bible describes Him. I pray you will do just that this spring, summer, fall, and winter.
